Esta expresión se usa en situaciones informales, a menudo en conversaciones diarias cuando se quiere transmitir flexibilidad o adaptabilidad. Es común entre hablantes nativos de inglés que desean dejar las opciones abiertas y no comprometidas por un plan rígido.

Un error común es traducirla literalmente como «tocar de oído». Aunque puede parecer similar, en inglés se refiere a adaptar planes según las circunstancias, no a tocar música sin partitura.
