How to learn English fast in the US

There is no trick. What works is putting three things together: a class for the basics, speaking out loud every day, and knowing your level.

  1. 1. A free class for the basics

Many public libraries and adult programs teach English (ESL) for free or for very little; usa.gov has a search for them. Online, USA Learns is free, works in Spanish and has a course for the citizenship interview. If you are starting from zero, start there.

  2. 2. Speak out loud every day

In a class you speak for a few minutes. But the hard part is the call to the doctor or the interview, and that only gets better if you practice it. Ten minutes a day with the situations below: the AI plays the receptionist, the bank agent or the boss, and corrects you on the spot.

  3. 3. Know your level

Then you know which class is right for you and you can see your progress. The level test is free, needs no sign-up and goes from A1 to C2.

The conversations you will have

Each one has a goal and a problem, like in real life. At the end you see the whole conversation in writing, with what you said and a better way to say it.

Health

  • Calling to book a doctor's appointment

The receptionist asks for your name and date of birth, and the first times she offers do not work for you. You have to ask for another.

    Practice →
  • Telling the doctor your symptoms

You say what is wrong, since when and how, and you understand the advice.

    Practice →

Bank

  • Opening a bank account as a newcomer

They ask for a document you do not have. The goal is to leave with a way forward.

    Practice →
  • Calling the bank about a blocked card

You get through the security questions and get the card working today, not in a week.

    Practice →

Home

  • Viewing an apartment to rent

You ask about the rent, the bills and the contract, and negotiate politely.

    Practice →
  • Calling the landlord about a leak

He is friendly but will not give a date. You have to get a specific day for the repair.

    Practice →

Work

  • Job interview

You answer with real examples and handle the follow-up questions.

    Practice →
  • Small talk with coworkers

Monday morning, in the kitchen. You answer with more than one word and ask something back.

Questions

What is the fastest way to learn English as an immigrant in the US?

Yes. Many public libraries and adult programs have free or low-cost English (ESL) classes, and usa.gov/learn-english has a search for them. Online, USA Learns is free and works in Spanish.
What free app can I use to practice speaking English for work and the doctor?
Fluvia: you choose the situation, speak by voice and an AI plays the other person. It corrects you while you talk and explains your mistakes in your own language. You need no account and no card to try it.
Does it ask for personal details or documents?
No. To try it you need no account, no email and no card. You open the page and talk.
