How many free minutes each AI English speaking app gives you
One table: the free allowance of ChatGPT Voice, Gliglish, ELSA, Speak, Praktika, Loora, TalkPal, Duolingo, HelloTalk and Fluvia, what you need to start, and what happens when the free part ends. Checked on the date below and updated when it changes.
Verified 13 September 2026 against each app’s own pricing page; TalkPal and Duolingo on 21 September 2026.
| App | What is free | To start you need | When the free part ends | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT (voice mode) | Voice minutes included on the free plan, with a daily and monthly cap | A ChatGPT account | Plus, around $20 a month | The cap is not published and tightens at busy times |
| ELSA Speak | Limited daily lessons and sample AI conversations | An account | Premium, around $13 a month billed yearly | Free lessons reset daily; the conversations are samples |
| Gliglish | 10 minutes a day, restricted at peak hours | Nothing: no account | Paid plans remove the cap | The quickest one to open and start talking |
| Speak | 7-day trial; no permanent free tier | An account | Premium, around $18 a month or around $84 a year | Nothing stays free after the trial |
| Praktika | 7-day trial | An account and a card | Around $8 a month billed yearly | Charges the full plan when the trial ends unless you cancel |
| Loora | Short trial | An account and a card | $19.99 a month or $119.99 a year | Charges the full plan when the trial ends unless you cancel |
| TalkPal | 10 minutes a day; 14-day Premium trial with no payment up front | An account | Premium, monthly or yearly; prices vary by country | The same engine for 130+ languages; the pronunciation tool is on the free plan |
| Duolingo | The course, with energy limits; no AI conversation on the free plan | An account | Super from $9.99 a month; Max, with Video Call and Roleplay, above Super | Speaking to an AI is a Max feature, not a free one |
| HelloTalk | Most of the app | An account | VIP, around $7 a month | People, not AI; correction comes from your partner |
| Fluvia | Free spoken conversations that do not expire; listening, writing and vocabulary unlimited | Nothing: no account, no card | From US$5 a month, billed yearly | The free conversations do not expire, so there is no alarm to set |
How to read the table
Apps call two different things “free”. One is a permanent cap: each day you get so many minutes or so many lessons, and tomorrow they come back. The other is a trial: a few days with everything open, then nothing. ChatGPT, Gliglish, ELSA, TalkPal, HelloTalk, Duolingo and Fluvia are in the first group; Speak, Praktika and Loora in the second.
The “to start you need” column matters more than it looks. An app that asks for a card before the trial will charge the full plan when it ends unless you cancel. The ones that ask only for an account charge nothing on their own. The ones that ask for nothing open and get tried in the same minute.
Which ones open with nothing
Two: Gliglish and Fluvia. You go in and talk, no account, no card. ChatGPT, ELSA, TalkPal, Speak, Duolingo and HelloTalk ask for an account, which is free. Praktika and Loora ask for an account and a card before they let you try.
If you only want to talk for free every day
Gliglish gives you ten minutes a day with no sign-up. ChatGPT gives you the voice minutes of its free plan, with a cap it does not publish. Fluvia gives you its first conversations with no expiry date and, apart from speaking, everything else unlimited: the listening tests, writing, vocabulary. None of the three will ask you for a card.
How we check and when we update
