How the test works

The test covers the four skills that make up real proficiency in a language, in four parts. Within each part, questions start at A1–A2 and become progressively harder, up to C1–C2 — so it's normal to find the last questions in each part difficult.

Listening uses short recordings of natural speech, half of them in connected speech: the fast, reduced English of films and real conversation (“whatcha gonna”, “shoulda”), in different voices and accents. In writing, you correct a sentence that contains one error. Reading checks whether you understand what a text means, not only what it says. In speaking, you describe four pictures out loud, for 20 seconds each.

When you finish, you get an estimate of your CEFR level, from A1 to C2, for each skill and overall. Most learners have an uneven profile — they understand a good deal more than they can say — and the breakdown shows exactly where.

Before you start

  • You have 12 minutes. The timer starts as soon as you press “Start the test”; most people finish in about 10.
  • There's no going back: once you answer a question, the test moves on. Answer what you can; unanswered questions count as wrong.
  • Questions get harder as you move through each part.
  • The speaking part uses your microphone. It's optional, but without it your result covers three skills, not four.
  • At the end you'll see your estimated level for each skill and overall — instantly, with no sign-up.

Frequently asked questions

How reliable is the result?
It's an estimate, not a certificate. It's built to be conservative: a single slip costs half a level, not a whole one, and lucky guesses are already priced in. For an official level you need an exam such as Cambridge, IELTS or TOEFL.
Why is there a timer, and why can't I go back?
Because your level is what you can do in real time. Going back to change answers, or looking them up, measures something else. The time is generous: 12 minutes for a test most people finish in 10.
Do I need an account or an email?
No. Your level appears on screen as soon as you finish, with no account and no email.
What happens to my recordings?
They're sent for transcription and scoring, and the audio isn't stored. Your answers aren't linked to you unless you choose to create an account.
